Spearville wanted to impress in its first state title appearance in football. The Royal Lancers (14-0) did not disappoint. In a season where the Lancers only had to play into the fourth quarter twice, they only needed three to defeat Hanover 62-16.

Senior quarterback Nathan Stein had 14 carries for 134 yards and four touchdowns. He also eclipsed the 4000 yard mark for rushing in his career. Fittingly, Stein ran in the final two point conversion to end the game late in the third quarter. Junior Luke Heskamp racked up over 100 yards and two touchdowns on the ground for Spearville as well, with senior Brandon Davis catching a touchdown pass from Stein. Heskamp also finished the game with an interception.

Spearville started the game by forcing a turnover on Hanover’s first drive. Brandon Davis scrambled after and recovered a fumble at midfield. Heskamp turned the turnover into a 48 yard touchdown run on the ensuing drive. The Lancers converted a two point conversion to go up 8-0.

Hanover (13-1) rallied back on a long drive that ended with a Will Bruna two yard touchdown run. Bruna finished the game 23 of 34 for 186 yards passing. Both teams would trade scores and found themselves deadlocked at 16-16 with just under six minutes left in the second quarter.

Then Spearville came to life. The Lancers turned to Nathan Stein who fought through tacklers on a 46-yard run into the endzone. The Lancers went up 24-16, and would never look back.

Including Stein’s run, the Lancers were able to rattle off 46 straight points, including 30 in the second quarter.

The championship is the first for Spearville’s football team. For the second straight season, Hanover finishes as the state’s runner up.
